Liverpool will be looking to make changes and additions to their squad this summer with an emphasis on value, as their latest set of accounts revealed a big loss.
They could reignite the fire surrounding a possible move for their former player Tom Ince from Blackpool, as Ince’s contract is due to expire at the Championship side this summer.
Liverpool may also be tempted to go after his teammate Matt Phillips who is in a similar situation, if they don’t think a youth team prospect such as Jordan Ibe is ready for a step up to the first team.
The problem Liverpool have is that Blackpool look set to have first refusal over whether to extend Ince’s contract.
That will ultimately means that if the club still ant him, they could have to pay a fee unless Ince shows a clear sign of intent that he doesn’t want to extend his deal and wants to push through a move to Liverpool.
Phillips is a 21-year-old right winger who could be very useful in taking some of the pressure off of Raheem Sterling, currently the number one winger at Anfield. His contract at Blackpool expires at the same time.
However, the problem with Phillips’ arrival is his consistency, which doesn’t seem to be good enough to challenge someone like Sterling strongly, to try and force him out of the side on a weekly basis.
The Ince rumours have been in place ever since last summer and he’s arguably a much better player now than when Liverpool were originally thought to be interested in him.
Another potential problem is wages because either player would warrant a better deal to move to Liverpool than they are currently on at Blackpool.
That is something Liverpool may be reluctant to offer consider the last exported wage bill was around the £150 million mark, which is something the club is trying to change with lower salaries and more bonuses.
If Liverpool can’t afford to pay big money for players this summer, then transfers like this are something they will have to look at.
Ince could certainly add to the attacking side of the midfield and would be a valuable squad addition but a free transfer for Phillips may be nothing more than a squad filler, or a fresher replacement for Stewart Downing.
Liverpool fans, what do you think?
