1. 1475 - Michelangelo is born

2. 1768 - The first edition of the Encyclopædia Britannica is published

3. 1825 - Beethoven's Opus 127: String Quartet No. 12 in E flat major is performed for the first time

4. 1951 - The trial of suspected spies Ethel and Julius Rosenberg, who were indicted for conspiring to obtain national defense secrets for the Soviets, starts in New York

5. 1957 - Ghana gains it's independence from Britain

6. 1960 - The United States announces that it would send 3,500 troops to Vietnam

7. 1961 - George Formby, the British entertainer known for his Ukulele, dies after suffering a heart attack

8. 1974 - UK miners bring an end to the 16 week dispute following a pay increase of over 30%

9. 1986 - Artist Georgia O’ Keefe dies at the age of 98

10. 1987 - Forty-nine people are confirmed dead and dozens are missing as a car ferry capsizes just outside the Belgian port of Zeebrugge

11. 1997 - Queen Elizabeth II launches the first royal website
