We always knew that Chelsea were likely to make changes this summer, with a new manager coming in and the personnel likely to be different.
Well the club’s Chief Executive has revealed that those changes will happen and he’s expecting them to happen before July 17, which is the start of Chelsea’s pre-season trip to Asia.
“When you look at the last three or four transfer windows, we have continued to invest - We will continue to strengthen the team and I am expecting the introduction of two or three new players,” he told the club’s website.
What this tells us is that Chelsea have more than likely already done the ground work for the manager they want to bring in because they are planning a few transfer deals to go through quickly.
The club has looked a little short up front at times this season so a forward has to be one of the players to come in. Who that is going to be is a bit of a lottery at the moment because it all depends on how the manager wants to bring in.
Chelsea recently tried, and failed, to sign Jack Butland from Birmingham City so a goalkeeper to provide competition for Petr Cech may also be one of the new signings talked about.
There is also the question of Frank Lampard’s future and how the club replaces him next season, if Chelsea stand by their current stance of not wanting to offer him a new contract for next year.
Chelsea need to make additions to the squad because after setting the early pace in the Premier League, they have fallen way behind the two Manchester clubs.
Their attempt to defend their European title was also not exactly glorious so squad additions should give Chelsea a greater chance of maintaining their European adventure for longer next season.
It’s all hypothetical until Rafa Benitez has left his post as interim manager and his successor has been named. However, Gourlay is showing that Chelsea have a clear and precise plan, typical of Roman Abramovich, over how they want to approach the next few months.
Chelsea fans, you’ve got to or three transfers, who do you want?
