Everton have been linked this week with the signing of Porto winger Christian Atsu. The Ghanaian winger, who has been compared to some to Lionel Messi, is reluctant to sign a new deal at the Lisbon club. Tottenham Hotspur have previously been strongly linked with the 21-year-old but it is now being reported The Toffees have already started negotiations with Porto about his potential signing. He has a release clause of €10 million in his current deal.
Some reports now ahead of the crunch FA Cup tie with Wigan Athletic at Goodison Park this weekend. The form of Kevin Mirallas has been a particulary eye-catching trend in the reports this week as the Belgian finally seems to have found his best form after a stuttering season affected by niggling injury problems.
However Wigan have been dealt a double injury boost ahead of the fixture with Adrian Piscu Lopez and Ryo Miyaichi both being available for action on Merseyside.
For Everton only Tim Howard remains a doubt with Jan Mucha on standby to take his place between the sticks if his back injury does not clear up.
Phil Jagielka will also miss the game and his ankle surgery looks set to keep him out for around three weeks meaning he is also likely to miss England’s World Cup qualifiers later in the month. Victor Anichebe and Nikica Jelavic will be battling for the starting striker role.
Manager David Moyes has called for the Goodison faithful to produce a similar atmosphere to the one created in the replay with Oldham in the last round. He believes filling the stadium and firing the players up ahead of a difficult run-in to the season could help them finish strong; and book a day at Wembley.
Everton youngster Jake Bidwell has extended his loan spell at Brentford for another month. The 19-year-old left back has been at Griffin Park since August and will now remain at the club until the start of April at least.
Another Everton youngster has good reason to be happy this week after George Green was called up for the England Under-17 squad to face Portugal, Russia and Slovenia later this month.
South African midfielder Steven Pienaar has delivered a public morale boost to young starlet Ross Barkley by stating he still believes the England Under-21 international can be one of the best players at the club in years to come as long as he starts to live up to his own hype.
Finally and on the website this week we have looked at five potential young goalkeepers who could be brought in as understudies to Tim Howard, the chances of Everton signing Heerenveen goal-machine Alfred Finnbogason and whether Seamus Coleman is the Premier Leagues most under-rated fullback.
