Arsenal need to finish fourth because they need the Champions League to maintain the current progression of the team and to enhance the financial stability and pulling power of the club.
Some Arsenal fans will be a little worried but they shouldn’t be because history is on their side. Arsenal have great experience of this sort of run and have qualified for the Champions League for well over a decade in succession.
They have fewer games to play than some of their rivals for fourth place e.g. Chelsea and Liverpool. This means Arsene Wenger can keep his squad fresher and rotate with strong and fully fit players coming into the side when needed.
They also have a relatively decent fixtures list when looking at the run in, which will give them confidence.
Manchester United are the only top four side they have left to play this season, which is a home fixture. At home, Arsenal are capable of beating any other side in England or Europe.
Arsenal do have some difficult away games against teams below them in the table but these are all winnable games, which they should win if Wenger picks the right team and uses the right formation and tactics.
Looking at the squad at the moment, they also seem a little fortunate that they are not carrying a higher number of injuries. They only have four first team players out; Podolski, Sagna, Diaby and Gibbs.
This allows Wenger to use his best or strongest team in a higher ratio of the remaining matches, which gives Arsenal the best chance of securing maximum points over the closing games of the season.
They should also be fuelled by recent defeats which have the ability to create a large amount of entrenched determination across a squad and club in general.
If Arsenal go out of the Champions League this week, it will only increase the importance of finishing fourth in the Premier League, which has become something they rely on.
If Arsenal don’t finish fourth then it will have a negative impact on the club but it won’t be end of the world bad. They still have everything to play for domestically over the rest of the season.
Arsenal fans, how confident are you of finishing fourth?
