He’s been out of work since he was sensationally sacked at Chelsea earlier in the season, shortly after winning the FA Cup and the Champions League with the West London side.
There are several things he can bring to the table and if he can take Reading and turn them into an established Premier League club, he will effectively be showing Chelsea all of the skills, passion and potential they have thrown away.
Di Matteo will be shocked after his exit from Chelsea, he still will be, which increases the chance that he’ll be looking to go to a club that can offer him longevity in terms of his job security.
Provided Reading down go down two seasons on the bounce or anything like that, that is something they will definitely be prepared to give him.
What that allows him to do is create a strong club, increase the strength of the infrastructure, build a solid side and forge a long and lasting relationship with the fans.
He’s also a manager that every single player and fan involved with Reading would respect. He’s slugged it out at the top level as a player and a coach and he doesn’t suffer fools easily.
That combination means he could enjoy the total authority and control at Reading which he wasn’t given at Chelsea and which is only enjoyed in the Premier League by Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger.
His tactics are certainly good enough to help Reading out of another season in the Championship and they have been good enough to win two major competitions recently in England and Europe.
That ensures that Reading will have a fighting chance in every single game for the rest of the season, if he is appointed as the next coach.
He offers security to a side because he’s not jumped ship at any point during his career. It would take a drastic set of circumstances for him to walk away from Reading if they show that faith in him, which can’t be said for the current odds on favourite for the job Paolo Di Canio.
Di Matteo will make Reading a better club. He will use what little resources he is given to create a respectable and solid team while giving younger players a chance to turn themselves into idols. Maybe that’s all Reading fans have wanted all along.
In the process, he should go a long way to making Chelsea regret ever letting him leave in the first place.
Di Matteo at Reading, will it happen?
