Danny Welbeck has been having a solid season at Manchester United but the one thing that has been missing from his game is goals.
United legend Bryan Robson has suggested that Welbeck needs to score more of them, a lot more of them, if he wants to enhance his role and status at the club alongside great strikers of the recent past.
"Danny has all the attributes you need, apart from being a natural finisher."
Robson has also suggested that Welbeck doesn’t have that ruthlessness that a top flight player needs to become a top star, the sort of selfishness that made Ruud van Nistelrooy one of the club’s greatest ever goalscorers.
It’s odd because the fact he’s such a nice young man is one of the things that has made him so popular. He embodies the classic elements of the game which you only got from grounded and genuinely nice players; solid work ethic and always doing what’s best for the team.
For him to change that means he has to change his personality which is not something that is easy to do for anyone in any walk of life.
Sir Alex Ferguson will be well aware that the one thing holding Welbeck back from greatness is his inability to score goals at the same rate as Robin Van Persie or Wayne Rooney. He has been playing out wide but even last season when he was up front, he was not prolific.
United are not a naïve club, they will be working on this part of his game and it’s not like he doesn’t have a good finish in him, as his goal away at Real Madrid showed in the Champions League.
United do need him to start scoring more goals though because if he does, they will have the best attacking unit in the Premier League by a country mile and one which can go a long way to securing routine titles over the next few years.
His keenness, his desire and his need to improve will all be things in Welbeck’s mind because if United do make a change to their attacking quartet in the near future, he will not want to be the player who is axed.
United fans, what do you make of Welbeck as a player and person?
