Nick Powell joined Manchester United from Crewe more than likely knowing that it wasn’t going to be all first team action straight away. After all, he is just 18-years-old.
He may have expected certain things to happen during his immediate United career which haven’t, meaning he can feel a little unlucky over the way his immediate career has gone.
Powell is a classic example of a youngster who arrives at United with a lot to prove and plenty of experience still to gain. It’s a mystery as to why the club haven’t sent him out on loan to another side in the Football League.
He has been playing regularly for the Under-21 side, which is still a very high standard of football but it’s still nothing compared to the experience that a young player can get in the first team of a professional club.
That makes it all the more mystifying as to why the club haven’t loaned him out but hey, in the words of Jose Mourinho, I am nothing to question anything Sir Alex Ferguson does at the club.
His position has also changed into more of an attacking midfield role whereas at Crewe, he was used for the simple reason of scoring goals, as an out and out centre forward to get at the opposition and cause chaos.
That does take time to adapt to, especially when you have grown up throughout your football life thinking that you’re going to be playing as a striker if you ever made it into professional football.
Again, the fact he’s not been loaned out to be used competitively in this way is a mystery because he would have come back to United more understanding of that position and the pressure attached with playing there.
Ferguson knows how to handle Powell but there are a few things about his United career, which are surprising and have stopped things from developing for him, as quickly as they may have done.
Maybe that’s just all part of Ferguson’s plan and maybe Powell is such a special player, he’s babying him to ensure that he can be lethal when he eventually gets into the United first team regularly.
What do you make of Powell’s first season at the club?
