He was unhappy following Porto's Champions League defeat to Malaga, when he was benched for the fifth time in six games.
It wasn't his ability called into question, but his fitness, with coach Vitor Perreira stating before kick-off he didn't feel the Colombian was ready to start the match.
Rodriguez stated following the match:
"I'm fine. Could have played the full 90 minutes, perfectly. It's the coaches' decision."
With the bitter taste of defeat still very much in effect, having one of his star players call him out was not what under-pressure coach Perreira would have wanted, and today he publicly responded to the winger.
"James is like any player who ask it. Everybody says feel good and ready to play 90 minutes. This is his opinion, but to me it is prepared to evaluate whether or not "
In other words, 'respect my opinion.'
What he said to Rodriguez in private is another matter, and United fans who would like to see Rodriguez arrive at Old Trafford in the summer will no doubt be fascinated to see how this plays out, starting with whether Rodriguez starts or is benched this Sunday away to Maritimo.
United fans, can this tempt Rodriguez into moving on?
