Sami Khedira could make his comeback for Real Madrid tomorrow afternoon.
This season has been one to forget for Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira. The German international dropped out of the reckoning for Real Madrid for a while, and found himself being lambasted in the Spanish press - one commentator even calling him 'a mule’.
Khedira was also said to be upset at Jose Mourinho’s sacking, as the pair got on well not to mention the departure of Mesut Ozil. The pair came through the German youth ranks together and are very close friends - so losing him to Arsenal this summer was also likely to prickle Khedira.
And then Khedira suffered a serious knee injury in an international match v Italy in November. He had torn his anterior cruciate ligament which was set to rule him out for the rest of the season.
But his miserable season might just have a positive ending.
He is back in the Real Madrid squad
Carlo Ancelotti has confirmed that he is back in the first-team fold after seven months out - a miraculous recovery that Madrid always said he would manage.
"He will be on the bench we have to be careful. He is well, but he needs to play little by little."
Now it looks like he could even make it to the World Cup - and maybe even take the suspended Xabi Alonso’s place for the Champions League final.
But now he is back fit - could the Premier League vultures circle again.
Chelsea’s interest has seemingly died with the arrival of Nemanja Matic while United would certainly benefit from his arrival, but it is hard to see him dropping Champions League football next season.
Arsenal therefore are the only ones with a chance of signing him in the Premier League. They are said to be looking for a player in this position - with German compatriot Lars Bender the reported favourite.
But he is said to be valued at £34 million - a price that seems way beyond Wenger’s price range - especially for a defensive midfielder.
No, it is likely that the rumours of an imminent contract extension carry water, and Khedira will stay in Madrid.
Can Khedira make it to the World Cup?
