1. 1781 - British General Charles Lord Cornwallis surrenders to U.S. General George Washington at Yorktown, Virginia. It was to be the last major battle of the American Revolutionary War

2. 1933 - Germany withdraws from the League of Nations

3. 1951 - U.S. President Truman signs an act officially ending the state of war with Germany

4. 1954 - Sam Allardyce, West Ham football manager, is born

5. 1960 - Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is arrested along with 50 other people for violating Georgia's newly enacted anti-trespass law, after staging a sit-in protest at eight stores in downtown Atlanta

6. 1973 - President Nixon refuses to hand over Watergate-related tapes to Special Prosecutor Archibold Cox, but said he would prepare a summary of their contents

7. 1987 - The UK stock market bottoms out after shares on Wall Street plummet following a wave of panic selling

8. 1989 - The Guildford Four were cleared of all charges and released after 14 years in prison. The charges were from the 1975 IRA bombings of public houses in Guildford and Woolrich, England

9. 2003 - David Blaine ends glass box stunt. The American illusionist David Blaine has his feet back on solid ground, after ending 44 days suspended in a glass box by the River Thames in London without food

10. 2004 - A senior British aid worker for Care International, Margaret Hassan, is kidnapped on her way to work in Iraq

11. 2005 - Saddam Hussein goes on trial in Baghdad for crimes against humanity
