3. 1919 - American-born Lady Astor becomes the first woman to take a seat in the UK Parliament

4. 1942 - Churchill, Roosevelt, and Stalin meet in Tehran for their first meeting during World War II

5. 1964 - The U.S. spacecraft Mariner 4 is launched on its way to the first successful mission to Mars

6. 1967 - Horse racing is suspended in Britain due to an outbreak of foot and mouth disease

7. 1968 - English children's writer Enid Blyton dies

8. 1990 - Margaret Thatcher formally tenders her resignation to the Queen and leaves Downing Street as UK Prime Minister for the last time
