Chelsea latest: Including Schurrle and Meireles

Meireles Chelsea

A round-up of news and gossip relating to Chelsea over the past 24 hours.

Chelsea are preparing a new bid for Bayer Leverkusen’s Andre Schurrle. The German forward admitted he was flattered by Chelsea’s interest and would consider his options if his current club were to accept a bid. Chelsea saw a £16m offer earlier in the summer rejected but will return with a new £20m bid to convince Leverkusen to sell the German international. The pursuit of the 21-year-old correlates with Chelsea’s other summer signing with a particular focus on youth to overhaul an ageing squad.

The Daily Mail reports that Chelsea are in discussions with Napoli over the potential sale of Raul Meireles. The 29-year-old will cost £8m and could be free to leave following the summer signings of Oscar, Hazard and Marin with Chelsea wanting to recoup some of their expenditure. The player joined from Liverpool at the close of the transfer window last summer for a reported £11m.

Further talks have taken place between Chelsea and Wigan over the proposed transfer of Victor Moses. Wigan have dropped their valuation of the player to £8.5m and Chelsea believe they could complete the signing before Sunday’s Community Shield match against Manchester City. Moses is keen to move back to London where he grew up and try and establish himself at the European Champions.

Chelsea’s Gary Cahill is looking forward to challenging Manchester City for the first trophy of the season in Sunday’s Community Shield match at Villa Park. Cahill appears in the match programme and reflects on a successful six months at the Stamford Bridge club following his move from Bolton. After tasting success last season, the defender is desperate for more and hopes Sunday can mark the beginning of a prolific season.

Chelsea captain John Terry met with the club secretary and solicitor to prepare his defence for the FA’s charge levied at him. John Terry has denied the charge and requested a personal hearing for which a date has not yet been set. The FA charge came after Terry was found not guilty of racial abuse in court.
