Why did Lucas Moura choose Paris Saint Germain over Manchester United?

PSG

After missing out on one of footballs most exciting prospects, what were the reasons behind Lucas Moura's decision to join PSG and not Manchester United?

It seems one of Manchester United major transfer targets for the summer is ready to snub them in favour of another club. Whilst Sir Alex maybe used to occasionally losing out to the Real Madrid’s, Barcelona’s and AC Milan’s of the world he will be smarting at the thought he is losing out to last season’s Ligue 1 runners-up Paris Saint-Germain for the talented Brazilian’s signature.

Following in the footsteps of another man who turned down Old Trafford advances; Lucas Moura has signed for the same European club Brazilian legend Ronaldinho made his continental debut.

The differences in this deal and the one of 11 years ago however are the amount of money being spent. When Ronaldinho moved to Paris from Gremio the overall fee was reportedly around €5million whereas the amount being quoted for the deal of Lucas is a staggering €45million.

There are obvious reasons for the price hike. Time has seen inflated transfer fees the norm in football and Sao Paolo are one of the richest clubs in Brazil, with no disrespect to the economical situation of Gremio, they are not near the financial clout of The Dearest but still, €45million for a 19 year old boy; I agree with Sir Alex, the game has gone mad.

But why shouldn’t we expect a club from Paris, France; one of the richest and most powerful cities in the world to be spending such large sums of money. Thiago Silva, Ezequiel Lavezzi and Zlatan Ibrahimovic have also arrived this summer in a spending spree rivalling some of the best. The fact is the Parisians have been punching below their weight for a very long time.

The nature of their sudden rise to the top of footballs financial tree however is what is worrying. Sudden investment from Qatari businessman has become the norm in recent years around Europe. But these investors see merely a commodity; the sudden fall of Malaga should be a massive warning beacon to how quickly things can turn with this unstable form of financial power.

Back to Lucas though why would he choose PSG over United? Rumours have persisted he simply preferred the idea of living in the French capital over Manchester. But perhaps it was just a case of money, I am certain Paris would have offered the lad more money than United; and at 19 money is hard to turn down. Or the news he is allowed to stay at Sao Paolo till January maybe the factor? Leonardo lured him in? Or the idea of emulating Ronaldinho?

I don’t think it was any of these, whether you agree with how they are conducting themselves or not the PSG experiment is an exciting one. Far too long have the English and Spanish clubs dominated the European transfer landscape and now some French upstarts have upset the applecart it obviously has repercussions. Lucas may just want to be part of a French revolution, and with the amount of money seemingly available there is potentially no limit to their rise.
