Arsenal latest: Including West Ham team news and Rosicky

Rosicky

News and gossip from Arsenal FC over the past 24 hours.

Arsenal’s German giant Per Mertesacker should be back from a virus in time to face West Ham this weekend. The defender missed the Champions League clash with Olympiakos in midweek after coming down ill in the 24 hours before hand but is expected to feature against West Ham at Upton Park.

Arsenal will still be without long-term absentee’s Jack Wilshere, Tomas Rosicky, Bacary Sagna and Emmanuel Frimpong, despite developments in the rehabilitation of a few of these perennially crocked names in recent weeks. Captain Thomas Vermaelen is a doubt with a virus while, Wojciech Szczesny and Abou Diaby also remain sidelined.

Arsene Wenger has come under fire from another former Premier League playing international manager this time in the shape of former Liverpool forward and current Czech Republic boss Vladimir Smicer. After receiving a tongue lashing from Didier Deschamps over the Abou Diaby incident just a day earlier Wenger would not have wanted the assumption that he has put pressure on Tomas Rosicky to call time on his international career for the Czech’s levelled at him by Smicer.

Wenger denied it saying he would never suggest a player should retire from playing for their national team unless they personally wanted to.

Arsene Wenger has again been quick to announce his desire to ease Jack Wilshere back into football after nearly 15 months out with a series of ankle, knee and foot injuries. Wilshere recently played his first football in that time in the under-21 clash with West Brom but Wenger says they will take a cautious approach rather than a crazy one in his rehabilitation. It follows reports that he could be fast-tracked to first team action after Abou Diaby picked up an injury.

Despite recently turning around his fortunes for Arsenal Aaron Ramsey has lost his Wales captaincy as Chris Coleman turns to Ashley Williams instead. The Swansea centre-back will wear the armband later this month as Coleman wants to relieve some of the pressure on the 21-year-old so that he can capture some of that recent form for his struggling nation.

Arsenal legend Tony Adams believes Arsenal were unequivocally wrong to sell star striker Robin Van Persie to Manchester United this summer. He claims it was a ‘mistake’ and that he believes Arsenal will come up trophy less once again this season.

Former Arsenal player Quincy Owusu-Abeyie has not forgotten his roots after slamming the slow pace of Tottenham’s performance in last night’s Europa League tie. The Ghanaian played at Arsenal as a youngster before being moved on to Spartak Moscow and he was perplexed at Arsenal’s North London rivals lack of mobility for a side consisting so many fast players as he face them for new side Panathinaikos.

Wolves are reportedly interested in re-signing Emmanuel Frimpong. The Ghanaian midfielder originally played at the club on loan earlier in the year but suffered a severe injury shortly after completing the deal that has kept him out of action until recently. Arsene Wenger will assess his fitness over the coming weeks and then open discussions about a potential return to the Molineux.

Lukas Podolski and Per Mertesacker have both been included in Germany's squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers. The games against Republic of Ireland and Sweden are on October 12th and Ocotber 16th respectively.
