What does the future hold for Frank Lampard?

Lampard And Terry

Having won all there is to win with Chelsea, should Lampard seek a new challenge next season?

Super Frank Lampard, the Chelsea fans chant. For 11 years, Frank Lampard has been what Paul Scholes is to Manchester United and Francesco Totti is to AS Roma.

A prolific midfielder who has inspired his team to glory but is it time to call heed to his Chelsea career?

A goal scorer, a keen passer with an engine that doesn't seem like stopping, Lampard is unique in many ways. Just 2 days ago he covered the most distance on the pitch against FC Nordsjælland and contributed an assist to Juan Mata's goal.

Already with 5 goals for club and country this season he doesn't look like letting up anytime soon so why has Lampard's role in the Chelsea team been reduced?

His age and younger midfielders in place are the most obvious reasons. Being 34 years old, perhaps Di Matteo is preserving his golden goose until the latter stages of the Premier League and club competitions which seems ideal for this rejuvenated Chelsea team.

Players like Oscar and Ramires are younger and have the energy to last longer but Lampard's ability and experience factor will be key in determining Chelsea's 2012-2013 season.

Recent reports of Roman Abramovich's one year contract policy in place for next season could spell the end to the illustrious careers of both Lampard and John Terry. Both Lampard and Terry are likely to seek longer contracts than offered. Could this be an indirect message to Chelsea's senior players?

If Abramovich is smart he will alter his policy for the sake of Chelsea's future.

There has also been reports of Lampard going overseas to the USA which could be good for both himself and future wife Christine Bleakley. David Beckham is a prime example of a player going overseas and still being able to play at a high level. A move to the US could also keep him in Roy Hodgson's England plans with the World Cup in 2014 on the horizon.

Frank Lampard is a legend to put it simply. A charismatic player on the pitch and a gentleman off it. We will have to wait to see what his future holds at the end of the season but whatever Lampard decides to do, his career as a Chelsea player will never be forgotten.
