Manchester United latest: Including Van Persie and Gaitan

Stretford End

A round-up of news, views and gossip over the last 24 hours relating to Manchester United.

The Red Devils beat Newcastle 3-0 yesterday at St James Park, a reverse scoreline of when the two teams met at the stadium in January. Evans, Evra and Cleverley were the goalscorers, with the England midfielder's subject of much debate, whether it was a cross or shot. Cleverley himself insists he meant it. He tweeted after the game; "Of course I meant it", contrary to the opinion of former Red Gary Neville, who commentating on the game suggested it was a fluke.

HITC writer Surya Solanki takes a look at three things we learned from the fixture, including a look at Sir Alex Ferguson's tactics in the match.

Ashley Young was a surprise guest in the away end at Newcastle, mixing with Manchester United fans as he watched the match as he continues his rehabilitation from injury.

Striker Robin van Persie will face no action over a possible 'elbow' on Yohan Cabaye, despite the protestations of Newcastle manager Alan Pardew. Referee Howard Webb confirmed today he had seen the alleged incident and deemed the coming together to be non-violent.

Meanwhile writer Nick Harris asks if Van Persie can 'do the impossible', and top the 37 goals he scored for Arsenal last season. He has nine to date already, and Sir Alex Ferguson has laid down the challenge.

Sir Alex Ferguson has welcomed the near return to fitness of defender Chris Smalling. The centre-back has not played yet this season after suffering a broken metatarsal during the summer. The manager insists Smalling will be fit and considered for selection when the international break is over.

Onto transfer rumours, and its a case of 'another day, another report linking Javier Hernandez away'; this time Porto are his suggested destination, in a far fetched swap deal to sign Colombian winger James Rodriguez. The attacker is a long-term target of United and was linked during the summer as a potential replacement for Nani.

Russian club Anzhi have been heavily linked with Manchester United target Nicolas Gaitan. Given the recent exodus of big name star from the Portuguese league to Russia it is very possible, with Hulk and Witsel snapped up in the last transfer window. Reports in the Russian media have claimed Guus Hiddink's side are willing to part with over £20 million for the Benfica player in the next transfer window.

Meanwhile Borussia Dortmund centre-back has confirmed he is keen on a move abroad one day. The German international, 23, was listed as one of our Vidic replacements in an article last week. However the defender has a deal with the German champions until 2017, and won't be leaving the club just yet.
