Will Sigurdsson play more of a role at Tottenham now Adebayor is fit?

Adebayor Madrid

The Icelandic international has been consigned to the bench by Dempsey's impressive performances alongside Defoe. But with Adebayor now in contention, Sigurdsson may have an important part to play.

Spurs may have looked short of strikers when Harry Kane departed on loan for Norwich, but with the system Villas-Boas is playing, the quartet of Adebayor, Defoe, Dempsey and Sigurssdon looks like enough cover. The question now will be working out which two will partner up best over the season.

Defoe has started very well, and looked especially good when playing with Clint Dempsey, who acts as a more natural foil for the England striker than Gylfi Sigurdsson did at the start of the season.

Dempsey links up the play with Defoe, and is more comfortable playing up with the striker to ensure Defoe isn't outnumbered by the defence.

Sigurdsson is more the mould of van der Vaart, he will play from deeper than Dempsey, and may be a better fit with Adebayor, who can hold up the ball against defences by himself.

Adebayor looked strong in the twenty minutes he played against Aston Villa at the weekend. It's hard to compare him with Defoe's performance though, as Spurs were in the ascendancy in the late stages, and Villa had to come forward more leaving space at the back.

However he was clearly more comfortable receiving the ball with his back to goal, and brought midfielders into the came more adeptly than Defoe.

One of those who benefitted was Sigurdsson, who looked like a natural partner for Adebayor in the ten minute run out he was given.

There are realistically five partnerships available to Villas Boas now, assuming he doesn't fancy playing Sigurdsson with Dempsey. It also seems unlikely he will go for two strikers in the near future, as the 4-2-3-1 system he has been playing has been increasingly successful.

For the moment Dempsey and Defoe are dove-tailing nicely, but you would also expect Adebayor to get plenty of starts this season.

It will be interesting to see which of his attacking midfielders Villas-Boas prefers when playing the Togolese striker.

Dempsey will clearly be no slouch playing alongside anyone, his experience and eye for goal are invaluable, but giving Sigurdsson a run alongside Adebayor may bring out the best in him, and give Spurs another strong option in attack.
