Why was David Moyes manager of the month for September?

Everton boss David Moyes has been named as the manager of the month for September. He has been able to get Everton to maintain their superb form in the early part of the season.

Here are five reasons why he deserves the award.

Consistency

Although Everton suffered their first defeat of the season in September, they have stayed remarkably consistent. Moyes guided the side to a home draw against Newcastle United before the side went and scored six goals in the games against Southampton and Swansea City, two of the most attack minded teams in the Premier League.

Team Selection

Throughout September, Moyes was able to name the same sort of side on a match by match basis. Marouane Fellaini has only just been injured and this is the first major injury that Moyes has had to deal with this season. The performance of the team throughout September suggests they are in a good place to deal with the fall out from this latest injury news and the consistency of selection is one of the things which won him the award.

“With the quality of the Premier League it is really hard to qualify for the Champions League but I wouldn't say we can't do it. It is possible and you have to aim for that. If we fall short and end up in the Europa League then so be it, but in recent years we have been pretty close, finishing sixth, seventh or eighth, so we want to do that at the very least,” said Moyes.

Tactics

In every game throughout September, other than the 2-0 away defeat at West Brom, Moyes has used sensible and effective tactics. That defeat came when he was looking to take a few more risks. The point being that the tactics he is using are allowing the side to efficiently defend and efficiently attack. He will now be challenged with having to tweak the system as opposition teams try to pick holes in the current method.

Table Position

Everton’s table position has stayed constant throughout the season. One of the things that may have tipped the award in Moyes’ direction is the table position of Everton and the teams they are in and around; Chelsea, Manchester United and Manchester City. Had Everton been in mid-table and had they been in and around other teams then Moyes may have struggled to win the September award.

Support

Another main reason which has allowed Moyes to go about his business is the support he enjoys both on and off the pitch. His players play for him, he is well supported by his chairman and the fans love him. Had Moyes been under pressure from all three sections then he would not have been able to focus fully on the team and the chances are that results would have been affected.
