Manchester City latest: Including Santa Cruz and Kolo Toure

Kolo Toure Manchester City

News and gossip from Manchester City in the past 24 hours.

Kolo Toure has vowed to stay at Manchester City and fight for his place at the club. The 31-year-old Ivorian believes he is still up to the task of Premier League football despite dropping below Vincent Kompany, Matija Nastasic, Joleon Lescott and seemingly Micah Richards in the City pecking order. However he believes he can cite the examples of cross-city rivals Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes for inspiration for how long he can prolong his career at The Etihad.

They may now be fierce rivals fighting for the Premier League title but Manchester City and Manchester United took a potential merger opportunity incredibly seriously in the 1960s. City’s vice-chairman Frank Johnson was desperately seeking a way to save the struggling side from the footballing abyss. Despite at that time, a genuine good-will between the clubs in comparison to today’s bitter rivalry, the merger idea was quashed before it ever became public, until now.

Gareth Barry has spoken of his joy at playing with world class team-mates at The Etihad. He claims that playing with the likes of David Silva and Yaya Toure simply makes his life under Roberto Mancini ‘much easier’. He also spoke of his disinterest when it comes to media plaudits as he admits he does not play the type of game that will receive widespread praise, insisting he is happy for his perceptively more illustrious team-mates to receive such acclamation.

Manchester City striker Roque Santa Cruz has spoken of his desire to face his parent club in the Champions League this season. The Paraguayan striker has been impressive this year on his loan stint at Malaga as they have started the campaign with real hopes of advancing to the next stage. He also said he holds no grudge against Mancini for not giving him a chance to make an impression at The Etihad. He admitted it was a difficult job for the Italian considering Santa Cruz was not one of his signings and was struggling with severe tendinitis for the majority of his Manchester career.

The former Blackburn striker also insisted that he does not wish to return to the Premier League; instead he hopes to move to Spain or secure a permanent deal back in South America.

Another of City’s loan stars had an astonishing senior debut today as under-18 prospect Emyr Huws produced a man-of-the-match performance on his debut for Northampton. No its not cobblers, he was superb in the heart of Aidy Boothroyd sides midfield controlling the tempo of the game throughout as Northampton waltzed to a 3-0 triumph over Exeter City.
