Newcastle United latest: Including Pardew and Afcon drama

St James Park

News and gossip from Newcastle United over the past 24 hours.

Alan Pardew has come under some criticism over his comments surrounding the clubs recent sponsorship deal with Wonga.com. Pardew says that the sponsorship is one of the biggest deals in the game and that after meeting with Wonga owner Errol Damelin he was sure of the clubs future prosperity. But considering the companies huge profits based on an interest rate if 4,214 per cent APR and the North East’s current regional financial problems and unemployment figures some members of the press have moved to criticise the gaffer for speaking about the deal.

Newcastle will not be without Papiss Cisse and Demba Ba while the African Nations is under way after they failed to qualify in spectacular fashion. Senegal were trailing 6-2 on aggregate when the home fans rioted, starting fires and even one fan running on the pitch in an aggressive manner toward Ivorian captain Didier Drogba. While there is no official word on the staus of the game it is widely reported that FIFA will reject any claims of a rematch and disqualify Senegal from the competition. However Cheick Tiote will likely travel with the Ivory Coast squad.

Steve Harper, who is fast approaching his 200th appearance for the club, is hoping to retain the first choice goalkeeper jersey upon Tim Krul’s return from injury. The veteran stopper has been in decent form since stepping in for Krul, who damaged his elbow on international duty for The Netherlands. He hopes he has done enough in his custodian duties to impress manager Alan Pardew and maintain his number one status.

Vurnon Anita has spoken about his potential ‘busiest man in football tag’. Since his move from Ajax the utility player has also had to deal with the pressures of becoming a new Dad. The Dutchman flys back and forth from Amsterdam and Newcastle to see his wife and new born baby in between searching for somewhere to live in the North-East and extra training to bulk up his comparatively slight 5ft 5 physique for the Premier League.

And finally James Perch believes The Magpies have the potential to reach the Europa League final, and potentially win it. The former Nottingham Forest player believes their recent 3-0 thumping of French side Bordeaux highlights there credentials and if star players Cabaye, Ba, Cisse and Tiote stay come January he sees no reason why they cannot battle for European silverware.
