Stepping into the shoes filled by Luka Modric is a mean feat for any player, especially one who was playing on loan with Shrewsbury Town just four years ago.
Gylfi Sigurdsson's 2012 has been an astounding one, after being brought in on loan to Swansea in January he set the Premier League alight, scoring seven goals for the club, and became a highly sought after player in the progress.
So far this season it has been a mixed start for the Icelander, who looked the business in pre-season, but has failed to score for Tottenham in the Premier League, netting instead against Carlisle and Maribor in the Capital One Cup and Europa League.
In fact he has started on the bench for Spurs in three of their last four Premier League games, with the one he did start being the 4-2 loss to Chelsea, so he is having trouble stamping his impression on the side, and that is with Moussa Dembele out injured.
It has led several Spurs fans to criticise him on our pages over the past week. These comments may make interesting reading for Liverpool fans, about the player they narrowly missed out on, and also reference another highly publicised Liverpool target in Clint Dempsey...
TottyHAM: "Spurs would do well to involve Falqué more often in the EPL, and stop messing about with the useless Sigurdsson, Dempsey and Gallas!"
leigh_vernier7: "The villain of the piece is Emperor Levy. He personally took charge of transfers some time back. Result? We sold Modric and van der Vaart. both world class and we signed Dempsey and Siggurdson. Both no more than OK. Now, there is zero creativity in Spurs midfield."
lemmonhead01: "Like most fans I'm still giving Sigurdsson and Dempsey the benefit of the doubt, but neither of them have done much so far to assuage my initial feeling that selling VDV was a mistake."
yoido: "Sigurdsson has been woeful in the league. No pace, no confidence, wanders around in a 5 yard radius, with no idea how to get on the ball in the hole. The prime contributor to 4 awful home performances, from 5 home league games this season."
sergio: "Sigurdsson has had a good start to his Tottenham career, 2 goals in his first 12 games and has also set up some goals. He´s only 23 and for an attacking mid (luxury player) it´s nice to see him work so hard for the team as well."
CW32: "The kid has a formidable goals-games ratio for any midfielder on paper which has kept me for one from screaming to put another mf player in hes place. Far from being our "midfield saviour" or best performing mf he is loosing the ball, looks isolated in posession and is clearly 2 yards of the pace!"
Spurs fans, does Sigurdsson just need time and patience to settle? Are Liverpool supporters fussed to have missed out?
