Liverpool latest: Nine left out for Anzhi, so who's in?

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has decided to ring the changes for Liverpool’s Europa League match against Anzhi. Steven Gerrard, Luis Suarez, Daniel Agger, Nuri Sahin, Pepe Reina, Glen Johnson, Raheem Sterling and Jose Enrique all have been left at home with the manager keeping one eye firmly on Sunday's clash with Chelsea, sparing them player the extensive trip to Russia.

Dani Pacheco has been recalled to the first team squad for the trip, and a number of youngsters have also been included in the traveling party. These include Jon Flanagan, Stephen Sama, Adam Morgan and Conor Coady.

Full squad: Jones, Gulacsi, Cole, Assaidi, Pacheco, Henderson, Coates, Downing, Wilson, Carragher, Suso, Shelvey, Coady, Yesil, Flanagan, Wisdom, Robinson, Morgan, Sama.

Rodgers said: "It is not a secondary team, it is a team in order to a) win the game and b) give players an opportunity to play where they want to play. There is certainly no lack of respect for Anzhi. We have a squad here that we feel can get a result."

In transfer news, Liverpool will face stiff competition from Tottenham Hotspur in the fight to sign Schalke striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar. Liverpool have been linked with a number of strikers after manager Brendan Rodgers confirmed he would be looking to bring someone in during the January transfer window.

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has admitted that he would have liked the chance to work under manager Jose Mourinho. Gerrard was asked by a fan which coach he most wanted to work with, outside Brendan Rodgers, and Gerrard identified the Real Madrid boss as his choice.

Stalled contract talks between Xabi Alonso and Real Madrid have fuelled speculation the midfielder could return to Liverpool. Alonso is keen to extend his current deal which expires in 2013 with Liverpool the only likely club he would be happy to join if a return to the Premier League was possible.

Wigan Athletic boss Roberto Martinez has described rumours linking goalkeeper Ali Al-Habsi with a move to Liverpool, as a compliment. Liverpool are reported to be lining up a £7 million bid for the Wigan shot stopper as a long term replacement for Pepe Reina. However, Martinez has said that Wigan are under no financial pressure and don’t need to sell.

Athletic Bilbao have opened contract talks with Liverpool target Fernando Amorebieta. The defender has been linked with a move to Liverpool and the Spanish club have moved quickly to squash any rumours before any possible links can be established between the two clubs.

Roma Sporting Director has invited clubs to open the bidding for key midfielder Daniele De Rossi. De Rossi is a high profile name who has been linked with a move to Liverpool since the summer. Roma are expected to hold for at least £25 million for any club that wants their key player.
