Is Luis Suarez the best player in the Premier League?

Luis Suarez Uruguay

That is what Liverpool teammate Jamie Carragher says, but could Chelsea's Juan Mata or Manchester United's Robin van Persie not have strong claim to that crown too, and what of Arsenal's Santi Cazorla?

Opinions. That's what makes football what it is, so divisive yet unifying - but we are guessing Jamie Carragher's assessment of who is the Premier League's best player may not have everybody nodding sagely in agreement.

Speaking the the Liverpool Echo, Carragher said: "I've said for 12 months now that he's the best player in the Premier League.

"And that is because he's maybe not playing alongside the kind of players that, for example, the Chelsea players can play alongside."

A fair point, but its not too long ago that Suarez was considered the most profligate finisher in the Premier League, too wasteful in converting his numerous opportunities into goals.

A recent hot streak has seen him net in his last three games, and he has 8 in 11 so far this season.

So who are Suarez's main contenders for such a subjective honour?

Robin van Persie - The reigning Football Writers and PFA Player of the Year, Suarez has some way to go if he is to match Van Persie's unerring consistency. The Dutchman scored 37 in all competitions last season, and netted 11 already for his new club this season already.

Juan Mata - The same summer Liverpool splashed out £20 million on Stewart Downing, just £3.5 million more could have seen them snap up Juan Mata. In the end it was Chelsea who took the plunge and the Spaniard has not disappointed. He is a class act, and is Chelsea's most indispensable player.

Santi Cazorla - Cazorla hasn't been in the Premier League for long, but his class is already apparent. Statisticians Opta, consider Cazorla to be the best player in the Premier League this season via their ratings on whoscored.com website which tracks and analyses performance.

Vincent Kompany - It isn't just strikers and attacking midfielders we need to take a look at, but defenders too. Kompany was voted the Barclays Premier League Player of the Year last season, after leading City to the Premier League title. Is there a better defender than him in the league?

Our opinion: A few months ago, to suggest Luis Suarez as the best player in the league would have been met with widespread derision, and even now we don't expect non-Liverpool fans to agree. Yet based on performance this season, it is hard to argue the Uruguayan does not belong in the esteemed company as the above.

Suarez needs to prove his consistency through the season ahead, you only have to look at David Silva to see how one player's form can tail off so dramatically. If he can do that, and keep his current level of performance up, then he might just be in with a chance of winning the prized individual awards Robin van Persie claimed last year.
