Manchester United could sign James Rodriguez for £24 million

FC Porto Trophy Celebration

A report has linked Manchester United with James Rodriguez once again.

Another week, another link between James Rodriguez and Manchester United. Expect this to continue until January, when weekly will become daily.

So where are we up to?

Well it is fast becoming clear that 21-year-old Rodriguez is United's number one transfer target for the window at present, with interest in other players fleeting at best.

As long as Nani remains inconsistent and poor, Rodriguez will continue to be talked up as United's next great winger.

But Nani isn't the only one; Ashley Young is yet to display anywhere near his best form this season - He has the excuse of injury of course- but being hooked on 45 minutes at Villa Park summed up his efforts since returning.

So a new winger certainly would shake it up at United, which brings us back to this morning's latest report, from the Mirror that United sent scouts to watch the Colombian for a seventh time. (They capped up seventh to underline its importance in true tabloid fashion).

Yet the most intriguing element of the report is Rodriguez' reported buyout clause. It states that the winger could be signed for £24 million; and this is a real breakthrough if true.

To quote the report: "United scouts saw the 21-year-old Colombian forward score against Academica de Coimbra. Porto insist they do not want to sell and he has a £24m buy-out clause in his contract."

For it was claimed last week by the Mail that the winger would cost United £36 million, with Porto determined to secure top price for their prized asset.

That certainly had United fans worried, with Sir Alex Ferguson's willingness to part with such a large sum of cash unknown, but potentially seeing his price reduced to £24 million makes a big difference.

Dependent on United's valuation of Nani, this deal really could work. If Nani was sold for the same price - Which may be a tough ask based on this season's performances - but the Russian clubs are rich and keen - it could be the perfect deal for the club.

All that remains to be seen now, is have the Mirror got it right?

Is the £24 million clause true or not? If so, then James Rodriguez could well be a Manchester United player come January.

What do you think, will United sign Rodriguez?
