Here are five candidates to win the golden boot award in the Premier League this season.
Luis Suarez, Liverpool, 8
Suarez is being hailed by some at Liverpool as the best striker currently in the Premier League. He is in superb form and always looks urgent and busy in and around the penalty area which is what makes him so dangerous. He is only going to get better as Liverpool are bound to bring in attacking support which will improve his chances of scoring goals and also mentally boost him as he’ll have others in the Liverpool side to personally compete against to aid against complacency.
Robin Van Persie, Manchester United, 8
Van Persie has had a brilliant impact since he joined United from Arsenal in the summer. Some Arsenal fans said last season was a fluke but he has started banging in the goals for United like he has been at the club for years. Van Persie is one of the first choice players in the United team and the difference between him and Suarez is that Van Persie is already surrounded by experienced players who will set up numerous chances for him to score each game.
Demba Ba, Newcastle United, 7
If Demba Ba can get over a recent injury blip and then stay fit for the rest of the season then there is no reason why he can’t finish as the top scorer in the Premier League. Newcastle have been able to form a system around Ba because of how effective he has been since he joined the club. A lot of the attacking play Newcastle produce goes through Ba which means he is perfectly positioned to take his goal scoring chances.
Dimitar Berbatov, Fulham, 5
Berbatov makes the list because he looks like his old self now that he has joined Fulham. He is back starting in a Premier League side and he seems happier when his place in the team is not really rivalled. He always looks a little bit last but he puts in the effort in the final third where it counts and gets into fantastic positions in vital areas which allows him to score easy goals. He also takes the penalties for Fulham which means a few more chances than others to score goals over the season.
Jermain Defoe, Tottenham Hotspur, 5
Defoe makes the five candidates to win the golden boot because of the way he has started the season at Spurs. He plays on the shoulder of the defence which means he is perfectly placed to race in behind and onto a good through ball. He is also one of the only players quick enough to keep up with the Tottenham wide men when the side counter attacks during difficult away matches. He is relatively certain of his place in the team which means he’ll get his chances to win this award.
