Who will be the most expensive transfer in January?

Pic Cash

Chelsea and Manchester City are both expected to enter the race for Falcao, but could Daniele de Rossi or Marouane Fellaini fetch the biggest price?

Whilst it may only be November, the January transfer window is just around the corner and the rumours are already going around the bend – but who will make the most expensive January move?

Front-runner in the New Year is Athletico Madrid’s Radamel Falcao who has been linked and linked and linked with a move to European champions Chelsea. However, Madrid have set an asking price for the 26-year-old of £46 million and suggestions that Chelsea are unwilling to cough up have seen Manchester City enter the picture.

City are willing and able to pay for the Colombian and are understood to be preparing to hijack the No9’s move to London. It looks as though he’ll be playing in Blue next season – one shade or another.

Brazilian starlet Neymar has been furiously courted by Spanish giants Barcelona who are the favourites to land his signature for a lump sum of £31 million. But the striker now claims he will delay his move to Europe until the summer, so the Catalans might just have to wait.

In the opposite direction, David Villa is wrapped up in a political quarrel at the Nou Camp, which has seen him relegated to the bench since his return from injury. The out-of-favour striker is valued at £20 million and is looking for a way out – potentially to Chelsea or Liverpool.

Chelsea have also been linked with a hijack of Manchester City’s move for Italian midfielder Daniele De Rossi who, like Villa is entangled in his own political dispute with his manager Zdeněk Zeman at Roma. He’s valued at £30 million which for a 29-year-old sounds excessive but the two Italian coaches vying for his signature are well aware of the quality that amount of money could buy in him.

A cheaper and more long-term solution for City would be Celtic’s Victor Wanyama who is being tracked by rivals Manchester City. His current manager Neil Lennon has strapped a £25 million price-tag to the 21-year-old and, judging by his recent performances against Barcelona, he’d be worth every penny.

United are also suffering a strange bout of defender-itis – injuries to Nemanja Vidic, Smalling, Evans, and Jones have seen them leak more goals that Sir Alex Ferguson would have liked this season. Vidic is being offered a £130,000 per week salary at Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala who are reportedly prepared to compensate United with £32 million for the secural of his services. That would cover the cost and some change of their summer purchase of Robin van Persie for £23 million.

Former club Arsenal are yet to adequately replace the Dutchman and are understood to be enquiring at Napoli over the availability of Edinson Cavani. The 25-year-old forward would bolster their struggling attack and is flexible enough that he could provide cover for Theo Walcott who has one foot out the door already at the Emirates.

But the Uruguayan won’t come cheap - £30 million is believed to be his buy-out price. For the same price they could bid for Marouane Fellaini, who is being linked with lucrative moves to either Chelsea or Paris Saint-Germain.

My instincts tell me that Falcao will be the most expensive January transfer but I wouldn’t be surprised to be surprised.
