Hugo Lloris will not leave Tottenham Hotspur in January

FIFA rules are pretty clear, a player can only play for two clubs in a season, so a rumoured move due to lack of playing time would clearly be counter-productive.

As Tottenham Hotspur's goalkeeping conundrum continues, further questions have arisen about whether Lloris will stay at a club where he is on the bench for league games.

The international break is the time when his situation is thrown into focus, partly because of a lack of other news, partly because Didier Deschamps is given more opportunities to air his views on the goalkeeping situation at Tottenham Hotspur.

However the rumours that Lloris might seek a move in January if he is not first choice keeper are highly likely to be wide of the mark, as the Frenchman would have significantly less opportunities at another team, who he wouldn’t be allowed to play for under FIFA regulations. Lloris has played for Lyon and Spurs this season, so is not permitted to play for third side.

The regulation in question reads:

“Players may be registered for a maximum of three clubs during the period from 1 July until 30 June of the following year. During this period, the player is only eligible to play in Official Matches for two clubs.”

Further to this rule, there is every chance the situation at Spurs will be clearer by January. There are three older keepers on the books: Gomes, Friedel and Cudicini, who will be leaving the playing staff sometime in the next year. Lloris knows this, and he may be brought into the first team before the end of the season anyway.

The situation is frustrating for fans as well as the player, with many believing Lloris should be starting already. But there is no chance a January move will come from that frustration, and the player and the club have until the end of the season to sort the situation.

Hopefully well before then Lloris will be between the sticks, and Spurs will have a world class keeper settled in the side.
