Now the Spaniard is fully fit Liverpool fans are once again being treated to the best of the former Newcastle United man. Recent performances against Chelsea and Wigan have been particularly impressive so other then Luis Suarez can Enrique be just as important at Anfield this season?
There has been a lot of talk recently over the impact that Luis Suarez has had at Liverpool FC. Of course there is little doubting the fact that the Uruguayan is among the best players in the league and has borne the responsibility of being Anfield’s one and only recognised striker with enthusiasm and skill.
Those on Merseyside will be quick to inform you the club is far from a one-man team and one individual in particular who has started to show his real quality for the club is Spanish left-back Jose Enrique.
The former Newcastle player tired toward the end of last season which saw Kenny Dalglish often use Glen Johnson instead of him and at the start of this season things were not getting any easier for the man.
He struggled with a niggling knee injury and slipped down the pecking order as his form struggled as a consequence:
‘’It’s been difficult as every footballer just wants to play, I tried to but was getting a lot of pain in my knee and because of that I couldn’t perform at my true level...Brendan Rodgers’ style of play suits me. His formation and tactics are the type of football I like to be involved in.’’
Eventually he took some time out and returned to the fold fully fit and sporting a new close shaved look that would strike fear into many a Premier League winger.
The result has been a series of much improved performances from the player that have been a great benefit for The Reds. Against Chelsea in particular he showed his strength, fitness and ability on the ball had not escaped him but was merely shackled by his previous fitness concerns. He was rightly awarded man-of-the-match.
This weekend against Wigan he played in a more advanced position and again looked the best player on show even grabbing a goal for his troubles. He was obviously delighted with his individual performance and the current form of his team.
"I am very happy, firstly not for my goal, but for the three points. I think we are playing well this season but we deserve more points"
With Enrique fully fit Liverpool finally look to be getting the best out of the former Newcastle United man once again and in doing so have added another dimension to their already impressive play.
Do you think the return to full fitness for Jose Enrique has played a large role in Liverpool’s change of fortunes?
