Manchester United lost 1-0 to Galatasary last night in the Champions League, their first defeat in the competition this season.
In the end, the result was not important, with qualification and first place already assured, the return to 'Hell' was more of a practice match for United.
Galatasaray's tough tackling showed Ferguson was indeed shrewd in resting key players Van Persie and Rooney - and it was a valuable opportunity to give match time to players such as Danny Welbeck and Anderson.
Also afforded a start was £4 million summer signing from Crewe, with the 18-year-old playing an attacking midfield role. It was exactly a year to the day to which he started for Crewe against Morecambe in League Two, a truly remarkable rise.
Last night will have been an invaluable learning experience for him, in the same stadium which young Ryan Giggs played in as a youngster back in 1993.
He was substituted on 74 minutes, ending the match having taken three shots, winning half of his aerial duels, and completing 81 per cent of his passes.
Here is how supporters have reacted to his performance on Twitter...
@georgepenny16: How much did we buy Nick Powell for? £50m less than we should have. Bargain of the decade.
@xbirchy: As for Nick Powell. What an exciting talent. Not looking out of place at all in a CL tie away at Galatasaray is great.
@redsandstorm: Nick Powell's invention really excites me.
@reddevilrome: Nick Powell - best on the park.
@waqar194: Nick Powell will be one of the best English youngsters. Technically really excellent
@shane14oneill: Nick powell so overrated.. Way out of his depth here
@eoinpm: That Nick Powell is going to be something special. (Disclaimer: I thought the same about Chris Eagles and Danny Higginbotham.)
@laighton_: Nick Powell for England. Much better than Shelvey
@baldeagle36: Serious question can someone give me a reason Nick Powell isn't starting more of the '2nd string' PL matches when we are resting players
@juliusschiazza: Nick Powell looking far more comfortable and composed than the likes of Anderson or Cleverley.
@alex_meechan88: Nick Powell showing his quality in a hostile environment in Turkey on his CL debut
@johnnysaidwhat: Why's Nick Powell getting found out second half?
@juliolaput28: Kudos to Nick Powell and his calmness. Reminds me of Berba when he used to play for us. Ice-cold for such a young age.
@pauljames28: Plenty to iron out in his game, but there's something promising about NickPowell. Intelligent, bit of swagger & an eye for space.
What did you think of Powell's performance?
