Arsenal ran out triumphant against Ligue 1 side Montpellier in the Champiosn League last night. Jack Wilshere opened the scoring on 48 minutes rushing onto a delicate nod down from Olivier Giroud to lift the ball over the oncoming goalkeeper. The score was doubled just after the hour mark in sublime style as Giroud was provider again versus his former team. The French international hit a dainty pass into the path of Lukas Podolski who hammered a volley into the back of the net to claim a comfortable if not inspiring victory and ensure passage to the second round of the Champions League.
Arsene Wenger now feels it is imperative the club avoid finishing runners-up in the group. He wants to avoid facing a team that has won their group so is adamant the club must do everything in their power to out-qualify Schalke 04 in match day 6 action when the German side tackle Montpellier and Arsenal face Olympiakos.
Arsene Wenger has urged Theo Walcott to commit himself to the club. The 23-year-old England international has been at the heart of a contract wrangle since the summer and at the start of the season he decided not to accept the first contract offer on the table. Since then Walcott’s performances have improved greatly and Wenger believes he is an integral member of the squad. While he does not doubt the former Southampton man will eventually sign a new deal he believes at some point Walcott ‘has to commit’.
Reports are linking Arsenal with a bid for Dieumerci Mbokani of Anderlecht after scouts were impressed with his performance against AC Milan in the Champions League last night. Everton, Newcastle United and Juventus have also been linked with the Congo striker by Anderlecht general manager Herman Van Holsbeeck and he is reportedly available at a cut-price £8.5 million.
In more transfer news it has emerged that Arsenal are reportedly the favourites to bag the much coveted Klaas Jan Huntelaar this January or in the summer. The 29-year-old Dutchman is out of contract in the summer and has a proven goalscoring record across Europe including scintillating form for Schalke 04 in the past two seasons. According to a source close to ‘The Hunters’ agent Arsenal are favourites to bag him in January. Meanwhile Bordeaux are struggling to come up with the goods in their pursuit of misfit Maraoune Chamakh.
Former Arsenal trainee Fabrice Muamba who suffered a cardiac arrest against while playing for Bolton Wanderers against Spurs in the FA Cup last season could one day return to football. He says he is scheduled to have a check-up in two years to determine whether his heart rhythm has returned to normal. If it has he holds hope a team would be willing to risk taking him on board. Other players such as Evander Sno and Anthony Van Loo have played on after suffering similar ailments.
