Chelsea v Manchester City: Five Key Battles

Chelsea V Manchester City

Chelsea and Manchester City lock horns over the weekend in the pick of the latest Premier League fixtures.

Here are the key battles for the match.

Gary Cahill v Sergio Aguero

Gary Cahill needs to be at his absolute best for this game because Aguero will be all over him like an annoying rash. Cahill is a very good defender when it comes to position and he needs to stay on the right side of Aguero at all times because the City striker will try and get a positional advantage wherever he can around the pitch. If Aguero can get the better of Cahill then he will have a much easier chance of scoring.

Ashley Cole v David Silva

Ashley Cole made his comeback against Juventus and should retain his spot ahead of Bertrand. He will have to be spot on in terms of his positioning because of his tricky opponent. Silva is predominantly a central player but he occasional drifts out to the right hand side of the City attack which is the area of the pitch that the Chelsea full back defends. Cole cannot afford to be too rush and try to nip in and intercept the ball because Silva will make him pay for it if he gets it wrong.

John Obi Mikel v Yaya Toure

Expect to see a very physical battle from these two players because they will be at each other for the whole game. Mikel is one of the only players in the Chelsea team who can physically match up to Toure who will try to drive through the heart of the Chelsea team using his size and power. If Mikel can keep him quiet and not give away many cheap fouls and free kicks then it means Mikel can effectively break up one of the main supply lines through to the City strikers.

Juan Mata v Gareth Barry

Mata is one of the most creative influences that Chelsea have in their side. He has been very consistent in all competitions so far this season and a lot of the Chelsea attacking play will go through the Spaniard. Expect Barry to play a defensive role in the City team and he will try to match Mata’s positions all over the pitch. Barry is very good at winning the ball back and linking defence with midfield but Mata will always be on the move so Barry has to be disciplined or he could leave City exposed.

Fernando Torres v Vincent Kompany

Kompany will see it as his responsibility to try and stay on top of Torres who is likely to start the match as the sole striker for Chelsea. Kompany has more than enough in terms of size and power to deal with Torres but he has to be careful with his challenges in and around the penalty box because Torres will always be looking for a touch or a foul that will give one of the talented midfield players the chance to test out Joe Hart.
