Tottenham Hotspur's youth success comes with a flip side

Real Madrid Barcelona Action

Alex Pritchard and Shaquille Coulthirst have been linked with a possible move to Spanish rivals Barca and Real. Is a move likely?

Tottenham Hotspur are almost assured of safe passage to the second round of the NextGen competition after Barcelona despatched of VfL Wolfsburg last night to render the German outfit redundant. Spurs now sit second and have only Anderlecht as a threat. The Belgian side however will have to win both their games including a fixture against Spurs in North London to have any chance of qualification.

It is largely down to an incredible performance in Barcelona when Spurs ran rampant at the Mini Estadi in a 4-1 victory. According to The Metro that result may have come at a cost for Alex Inglethorpe and eventually the Spurs first-team. They report that Barcelona have become interested in the two star performers of this seasons campaign and along with classico rivals Real Madrid could be readying a move for both players.

Alex Pritchard and Shaquille Coulthirst have both scored four goals in the competition making them joint top scorers with Ajax sensation Viktor Fischer and the performances of the two have been vital toward Spurs being on the verge of the second round.

Pritchard has demonstrated his technical ability throughout the campaign and is following on from a successful stint in last year’s edition where again he shone for the Young Lilywhites scoring four goals. Coulthirst bagged two last season and has already doubled that record this year. His powerful displays up front have seen him become a threat for any of the teams in the competition.

Pritchard was previously at West Ham United and linked with a move to QPR in the summer; at 19 he is probably wondering when he will get an extended run in the first team picture. Coulthirst has not been so hotly tipped as his year older team-mate but with his recent performances has begun to turn some heads.

The report itself actually carries no official source which usually means that a deal will not be forthcoming so Tottenham fans should not fear. The two are highly talented and there is surely no doubt are in the plans for a future first-team berth. The lure of Barca or Real may have been too hard to reject especially Barca where they would have the opportunity to work at one of the best facilities in the world.

What do you make on the potential for these two talents to step up to the first team?
