Reports have surfaced, emanating from the British press that Liverpool are lining up a January bid of £8 million for German winger Kevin Großkreutz.
The German wide-man currently plays for Bundesliga champions Borussia Dortmund but the 24-year-old has been linked with a move away from the club.
The 6ft1” winger added fuel to fire of transfer speculation recently when he spoke openly about his desire to play in England.
“The Premier League will be my first choice,” he said.
“I really like English football.”
Liverpool are understood to have sent scouts to monitor his potential value to the team – scouts filed reports on his recent performance for Dortmund against Ajax in the Champion’s League, the German champions were victorious with an emphatic 4-1 score line against the Dutch champions.
Reds’ boss Brendan Rodgers is keen on making a move for the player who could add more creativity and firepower to the Liverpool attack. Großkreutz has yet to score a goal in 15 appearances for Dortmund so far this season, but has proven himself quite capable of adding ten goals per season to the team’s tally.
The transfer rumours have sparked concerns over the future of Stewart Downing – the English winger has seldom performed to an acceptable standard for the Reds, since his arrival last year. His form has been inconsistent, offering little to justify his £20 million price tag.
He has featured in just 5 league games for the Reds so far this season and has been linked with a move away from Merseyside in January – Arsenal is tipped as his destination of choice in a deal that could see Theo Walcott move in the opposite direction.
Downing is rated now at an approximate value of £10 million, with Liverpool keen to move him on for a cut price. He has earned 34 caps for his country but has never scored a goal for England, nor has he scored a goal for Liverpool in the Premier League, something he may look to rectify elsewhere – especially if he intends to improve his form and fitness in order to impress England boss Roy Hodgson in the run up to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
