NextGen Series: Liverpool, Aston Villa and Manchester City hunt wins

Sporting Lisbon

Liverpool, Aston Villa and Manchester City's youngsters all look for wins in order to stay in contention as Tottenham Hotspur can qualify without kicking a ball depending on results. Arsenal will also be keeping an eye on the action in their Group as six games get under way in six different countries.

Group 1

Wolfsburg v Anderlecht

In Group 1 anything but a win for Anderlecht will see Tottenham Hotspur through to the next round along with Barcelona. The Belgian side face off against Wolfsburg and victory will see them go into the final fixture against Spurs at Hotspur Way with an outside chance of qualifying. The last time the two met it was Wolfsburg who came out on top winning 2-1 thanks to goals from Albion Avdijaj and Philip Hauck at the Constant Vanden Stock. Hope will be high that by the end of the nights action Spurs will be assured of a place in the next round.

Group 2

Paris Saint-Germain v Manchester City

English interest in Group 2 where Manchester City travel to Paris for a must win game. City find themselves in third place overall and the game against PSG is the last opportunity for Atilio Lombardo’s men to put points on the board. PSG are top of the Group and beat City in Manchester 2-0 at the end of August but City have improved significantly since then. Even if City do win they will still have to rely on Juventus losing their final two fixtures away to Fenerbahce and PSG in order to progress to the next stage. Even then a swing of five goals difference would also be required so City look all but out.

Group 4

PSV Eindhoven v Celtic

Sporting Lisbon v Aston Villa

The most exciting action comes from Group 4 which sees both the final games getting under way this evening with the possibility of all four teams making it to the latter stages. Celtic must beat PSV if they are going to have any chance of qualifying but both teams will rely heavily on what happens in the other fixture between Villa and Sporting in Lisbon. The Portuguese side have already qualified as Group 4 winners while Villa will qualify if they win. If Villa lose Celtic can qualify with a two-goal victory over PSV in Holland while the Dutch outfit simply need a win as their goal difference would not be good enough to see them surpass Villa in the scenario of shared points.

Group 5

Liverpool v Borussia Dortmund

In Group 5 it is simple; Liverpool must avoid defeat to stand any chance of qualifying. While technically a draw will not see them eliminated it would leave them relying on the already qualified Rosenborg going to Milan and beating reigning champions Inter. It would also leave Liverpool needing to beat Inter at St Helens in the final fixture so essentially the game today is a must win against a Dortmund side who beat them 2-1 little over a month ago.

Group 6

Athletic Bilbao v Marseille

Finally in Group 6 Arsenal will be keeping an eye on events at the San Mames in the early evening kick-off as Bilbao entertain Marseille. A Bilbao win will put The Gunners bottom of the group with just one game remaining against Bilbao in a weeks’ time. Marseille can qualify with anything but defeat as the remaining two games both involve the Basque side.
