Newcastle should write Southampton a blank cheque for Adam Lallana

St James Park

Newcastle United have been linked with Southampton playmaker Adam Lallana. If a formal approach is made they should pay whatever Southampton ask for, as he will be well worth it.

Adam Lallana does not enjoy the same sort of profile as creative players at some of the bigger clubs. However, there are very few more effective when it comes to not only getting forward but also driving the team forward and getting all attacking players hunting as a unit.

If Newcastle can make something of the latest reports linking them with the Saints captain then the price they ultimately pay is not going to be cheap. However, they should pay whatever Southampton want for Lallana because they could go and spend a bucket load of cash on someone who isn’t even half as good.

Lallana has started all 15 games for the Saints this season with two goals and four assists. His stats will be overlooked because of the current situation the club is in and the teams they have been soundly beaten by. However, he is very effective in the final third and has a current tally of 27 shots off target and ten shots on target which is as high a ratio as any other player in the league.

Therefore, it could be suggested that his goals and assists figures are poor by comparison but no team is easy to score against in the Premier League and Southampton have been on the back foot in many matches which means a large majority of these shots have come on the counter attack and under pressure.

Another reason for the club to invest is his age. At 24-years-old he is handling a massive responsibility by leading the club in the top division of English football. He will be expected to mature and get even better over the next two to three years and he could be even more effective than Kevin Nolan was in a Newcastle shirt or than Yohan Cabaye currently is.

His age links in well with his fitness because he hasn’t missed a match this season and he only missed eight games in a 46 match season for the club in the Championship last year. Considering how injury prone Newcastle are at the moment this is very important.

Lallana is the prize asset of Southampton so they are not going to let him go without a fight. The club will more than likely ask for a fee around the £20 million mark, if not more, because he is that valuable to a side that is currently looking to hold off the threat of relegation back down to the Championship.

It’s much more likely that Newcastle could move for him in the summer but the current injuries at the club could force a bid for Lallana this January. If the two parties can talk sensibly over the move then Newcastle should just put a blank piece of paper in front of Southampton because Lallana is quite frankly an awesome little player.
