New York Jets – Last chance saloon for Sanchez?

Sanchez And Jets

New York Jets coach Rex Ryan has publicly backed under fire quarterback Mark Sanchez by announcing he will start on Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

“The biggest thing that I kept coming back to was who gives us the best opportunity to win,” said Ryan.

“When I kept coming back to that, I believe the correct answer is Mark Sanchez.”

Ryan solicited input from numerous people before making the decision, and he admitted there were dissenting voices. Ultimately, Ryan stated it was his call and he did not receive any pressure from the Jets’ owner, Woody Johnson.

Following on from Sanchez’s comedic display against the New England Patriots he had another embarrassing display last Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals, throwing three interceptions in the first half.

Ryan finally satisfied booing fans at MetLife Stadium when he replaced the ineffective Sanchez with debutant Greg McElroy late in the third quarter.

McElroy completed 5 of 7 passes for 29 yards and a touchdown in the Jets’ 7-6 win.

The performance led to speculation that McElroy, the 2011 seventh-round pick out of Alabama, would unseat Sanchez.

Ryan did little to extinguish those rumours by mulling his options for 48 hours.

Ryan informed the quarterbacks of the decision in a 10-minute meeting on Wednesday morning. “I wanted to make sure I was thorough with it. I know it’s a huge decision, but it’s one I feel great about.”

Ryan and Jets have steadfastly defended the underperforming Sanchez this season and Ryan has said the team’s financial commitment to Sanchez had “absolutely zero” impact on the decision.

Sanchez signed a three-year contract extension in March that guarantees him $8.25 million next season.

Even if the financial commitment is not an issue, many fans are questioning how long Ryan’s commitment to Sanchez can last especially if his 55 percent completion percentage rate this year (the lowest of any quarterback with at least 180 passes) doesn’t improve.
