Fernando Llorente is one of the most high profile available strikers and he’s just created a frenzy among clubs all over Europe by stating that he will not sign a new contract with Athletic Bilbao.
Spurs are one of the sides that have been linked with a move for him and they should seriously consider tabling a monumental offer to ensure that he becomes a Tottenham player before any of their rivals can act and try to sell the tall striker a better deal. He could be the missing piece if the puzzle for Spurs in a variety of ways.
The failure of Emmanuel Adebayor to hold down a starting place in the Tottenham team this season has left the side without a real physical presence in attack. This is taking nothing away from Jermain Defoe who has been arguably the best English striker in the league this season.
The point is that Llorente would add something to the Spurs attack which they don’t already have and this is what managers need to look at when they are considering singing someone. He adds all of the physical presence and intimidation enabled by Adebayor but the difference is he’s been brought up playing Spanish style football which makes him ideally suited for many of the other players at Spurs.
Any football fan will admit that Spurs are at their very best when they keep the ball on the floor. The lack of a tall striker this season has meant they have had no one to cross the ball in for or play the ball long to. These are extra elements to Llorente’s game although Tottenham should consider signing him to advance the way they are currently playing and not to change it.
He’s struggled this season scoring only one goal but this ratio should improve now he has mind isn’t constantly focused on whether he should stay at Bilbao and in Spain. The problem Spurs have in terms of signing him is the fact that Bilbao are going to push him out this January instead of letting him leave for free in the summer.
However, bear in mind he has been permanently glued to the subs bench this season with the club refusing to start him in matches because of his stance over his future. This is another reason to sing him, he’s going to be boiling over with determination and aggression, two things any player needs in the Premier League.
Arsenal and Liverpool, as well as other European interest, have also been linked with Llorente. This ensures that Spurs will not get their man on the cheap and they may well have to offer the player a better package in order to get him to sign on the dotted line.
Spurs need to sign him, not because he’s just a big lad and a different player but because he can fit in instantly to the way the club is playing football under Andre Villas-Boas and his record of 17 goals in 24 starts last season proves he can be prolific.
Add that with Jermain Defoe and you get a Champions League place at the end of the season.
