Good news continues at Swansea as stadium expansion is planned

Swansea Fans

The club's chairman Huw Jenkins has talked about the plans to add up to 12,000 seats to the Liberty, as demand continues to grow with Swansea's success on the pitch.

There's no doubt it's a very good time to be a Swansea fan. The club are performing well in the league, already looking set to better their 11th place finish from last season, they play an attractive brand of football that plenty of other sides are looking to emulate, and they have an exciting young squad and manager.

The back to back wins over West Brom and Arsenal have added to the good feeling around the Liberty, and news that the club is planning to expand the stadium will please the fans further.

Given their recent success in the Premier League and the Championship, and the quality of football they play, it's unsurprising that demand outstrips supply at the 20,500 seater Liberty stadium, which has regularly sold out over the past 5-6 years.

With Swansea performing well in the league again this season, the club are looking to capitalise on that demand by increasing the capacity of the Liberty by 12,000 seats to the South, East and North stands. Starting with the East stand expansion, the club would hope to get the work started and finished in 12 months.

Match day revenue is a key part of the financial stability of a club, and is also the only way many teams can compete in the transfer market.

Swansea are missing out a chunk of money at the moment by not having the room to accommodate the fans that want to come to their matches, and if they can expand the stadium as quickly as suggested, it will be a welcome boost to the club's coffers.

Swansea's place in the Premier League will be central to any expansion plans, making their strong start this season particularly well-timed.

The appointment of Laudrup and their excellent work in the transfer market this summer means they have a manager and a squad set up for the long term.  Things can change quickly in football, but Swansea is a well run club in an excellent position to continue to grow, and the stadium expansion is the logical next step.
