West Ham v Liverpool - But Who Are The Underdogs ?

West Ham Upton Park

It was in 2006 that Steven Gerrard broke West Ham's hearts, and Liverpool walked off with their seventh FA.

Since then, Liverpool went on to another Champions League final and won last season's League Cup. West Ham got relegated. But the fortune's of the clubs this season suggests that Sunday's Premier League match at Upton Park will be a lot closer than recent history might suggest.

Liverpool are clearly a club in transition, and the jury is still out on whether manager Brendan Rodgers is the man to return Liverpool to former glories. Liverpool talisman Luis Suarez is also out on suspension for the visit to West Ham, and a tough midweek match in the Europa might also mean a case of tired Liverpool legs for some.

West Ham, on the other hand, almost blew their promotion chances last season - gaining promotion through the play-offs, but have started the season very strongly and home advantage, and Liverpool's recent poor away form, probably makes them slight favourites.

Stevie Gerrard, of course, is West Ham's bogey man and he is expected to play. West Ham will no doubt hope that he can be neutralized by the excellent Kevin Nolan and Momo Diamé, who was so impressive against Chelsea last weekend.

It's a long time since West Ham go into a match against Liverpool looking down on them from the Premier League table, and the match, which will pitch two very different managers with very different styles against each other, is sure to be a close run and entertaining thing. And you can expect plenty of goals.
