Tottenham Hotspur latest: Including Cahill link and Livermore out?

Tim Cahill

News, views, and gossip relating to Tottenham Hotspur over the past 24 hours.

Tottenham were defeated yesterday 2-1 at Goodison Park by Everton after a late fightback by the home side, which leaves the two sides level on points, although Everton have a marginally superior goal difference. West Brom are also on 26 points, with Arsenal two behind after beating the Baggies at the weekend. William Gallas has refused to blame tiredness as a reason for the defeat and said the team need to show greater maturity. HITC's Nick Harris takes a look at five talking points supporters can take away from the match.

Spurs could however be poised to attempt to sign a former Everton player on loan, report the Mail. The paper claims Spurs are one of four sides interested in bringing in Tim Cahill on loan from MLS side New York Red Bulls. The Australian left Everton in the summer and had been expected to return to the Toffees in January, but the Merseyside club will face competition. Sunderland, Newcastle and QPR are all interested in the 33-year-old along with Spurs. It perhaps seems a bit far fetched to us, Cahill has such a relationship with Everton that he would surely only re-join them rather than a competitor, but don't shoot the messenger...

Outgoing could be midfielder Jake Livermore who has fallen down the pecking order at White Hart Lane this season, overtaken by a returning Tom Huddlestone and an emerging Tom Carroll. The 23-year-old is thought to be a target for QPR and former manager Harry Redknapp, who may look to bring the Englishman in on loan. Would it be a good move for Livermore and Spurs to allow him to get some playing time? You tell us your opinion...

One player already on loan, Danny Rose, is very much wanted at Sunderland by manager Martin O'Neill. The Black Cats coach has said he wants to turn the season long deal into a permanent one at the end of the campaign. Another Tottenham player wanted by Sunderland is said to be Michael Dawson, with rumours of a £5 million bid for the defender circulating.

The Mirror claim Tottenham are interested in a River Plate star, the second from the club to be linked in as many months. This time it is Uruguayan Carlos Sanchez, valued at £7.5 million who could add competition on the flanks for Bale and Lennon. Last month Spurs were linked with his teammate Leo Ponzio.

Right-back Adam Smith, currently on loan at Millwall, is open to extending his loan at The Den, where he has impressed since joining Kenny Jackett's side. The Lions have lost just once in 14 matches, and Smith's deal is set to expire on January 31, but the defender has stated he is open to extending it until the end of the season.
