Arsenal latest: Including Bradford fall-out and Guardiola

News and gossip from Arsenal FC in the past 24 hours

Arsenal have crashed out of the League Cup after becoming the victims of a giant-killing from League Two side Bradford City. After pulling a goal back through Thomas Vermaelen late in normal time it seemed that Arsene Wengers blushes were going to be spared after Gary Anderson had given The Bantams an early lead. However despite relentless late pressure Matt Duke stood form in the opposing goal before they ran out 3-2 winners in the penalty shoot-out after Vermaelen missed the final crucial kick.

A lot of blame has been pinned on several doors but many column inches were dedicated to the first-half miss from Gervinho. With an open goal gaping the Ivorian simply needed to make solid contact with the ball in order to bring Arsenal into a game and could have changed the result entirely. However he managed to miss the ball entirely in what is being called one of the worst misses in League Cup history. The loss made one fan so mad the Arsenal supporter decided to burn their shirt; pictures here.

Another reason has been mooted as possibly being behind the massive cup loss at Valley Parade; the magic of the cup. Usually attributed to the FA Cup the phrase takes on more powerful meaning when you consider who it is being attributed to; popular TV magician Dynamo. The 29-year-old is a boyhood Bradford City fan and he claims he was willing them to victory perhaps even playing an illusory part in Thomas Vermaelen’s penalty miss. The guy can walk on water so it would not be that big a deal.

Despite increasing calls for Arsene Wenger to be let go from his duties at The Emirates it is believed he still has one of the safest jobs in European football. It is believed he is still held in very high regard by Ivan Gazidis and the rest of the board so is unlikely to find himself in any danger of losing his position at the club despite the clubs current slump in form and barren spell for silverware.

However Pep Guardiola is reported as telling Goal.com that Arsenal are his preferred choice if he takes a job in the Premier League. The appointment would be a huge coup, although it is likely no movement will take place on this until the season's end. The Gunners main threat to secure the in-demand Spaniard comes from Manchester United and AC Milan, but the former is dependent on Sir Alex Ferguson deciding to walk away, while Jose Mourinho has also been strongly linked with that position.

Rumours abounded earlier in the week that Nani was on his way to Arsenal after he was reportedly spotted at Arsenal’s training ground while his team were in action against Manchester City in the derby game. However it has now been revealed that he was not at London Colney for Arsenal but in fact next-door at the Watford training facility. He is currently engaged to a mother of an under-10 player for The Glory Hornet Boys so the rumours may be slightly premature.

Arsenal are likely to be alerted to news that Athletic Bilbao striker Fernando Llorente has stated a desire to play in the Premier League one day and that no deal has been agreed with Juventus as previously reported. He is not expected to be moving anywhere until the summer when his contract at San Mames runs out and he is free to move on a free transfer but he is allowed to start discussing the Bosman transfer with clubs outside Spain from January. Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool are also being linked with his signature.
