Five things to expect from Vidic's return

Vidic

Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed that club captain Nemanja Vidic is expected to return for the Premier League match against Sunderland this weekend.

What five things can United fans expect?

Leadership

United will have their natural leader back which will have an impact on not only the defence, but the entire team. Vidic will be very useful in ensuring that there are no repeats of recent matches where United have been forced to come from behind to win matches late on, as the natural leader in the side, he simply won’t allow it.

Organisation

Vidic’s return means defensive organisation in the back four. This means United will keep a straight back line, they won’t drop deep on top of the goalkeeper and they generally won’t get bullied from set pieces as they have been doing. If anything is going slightly wrong then Vidic can spot it early and fix the problem.

Threat

Vidic will be a real threat for United in terms of set pieces. He is one of the best headers of the ball in the Premier League and he offers them a great threat going forward for corners and free kicks. This is an area where the likes of Patrice Evra and Jonny Evans have done well this season so he will just amplify that success.

Determination

Vidic will be very determined and United fans can expect to see that in his performance. He will be busting a gut to get to every tackle, every run by an opposition forward and generally just to produce a perfect defensive performance. Vidic has had two major spells out of the side in the last two seasons which guarantee a high level of determination upon a return.

Shape and Space

Vidic has superb command of shape and space. Shape in terms of what he can see ahead of him and how the team reacts under pressure. This doesn’t just mean defensive shape but the shape of the whole team. He is also very good at making sure the defence squeezes certain spaces on the field which makes it easier for the midfield players to win the ball back.
