NextGen Series: Tottenham victory can also see Chelsea through in todays action

Spurs Pre Season

Tottenham entertain Anderlecht at Hotspur Way today in a fixture that could have huge ramifications for both Chelsea and Liverpool's hopes of making the second round.

Hotspur Way is the venue for an intriguing NextGen Series tie as Tottenham Hotspur welcome Anderlecht to North London this afternoon in what could be a very important fixture. It is the final game of Group 1 and both teams have a shot at qualification. Spurs are currently on eight points occupying the second automatic spot behind the already advanced Barcelona while the Belgian outfit are in third on six. Anything but defeat for Spurs and they will be through to the next stage while the result could also have an effect on the rest of the teams waiting on qualification.

If Anderlecht are to win it would leave Spurs in third spot on eight points and awaiting the result in the Liverpool vs. Inter Milan game in January. However if Spurs were to avoid defeat it would automatically see Chelsea and Marseille qualify as best third-placed teams with Liverpool battling it put to usurp Anderlecht as the fourth and final entrant to the next round. Therefore as important as this game is for Spurs it also has overbearing ramifications for Chelsea and Liverpool’s campaigns.

Chelsea drew 0-0 in a drab game with Ajax at Aldershot last night leaving them with the undesirable task of travelling to Amsterdam hoping to pick up a decent result. However they will be hoping that Spurs do them a massive favour tonight with victory or a draw with Anderlecht effectively making their final game with Ajax a dead rubber.

The last time the two faced was on Halloween and despite taking the lead through a Nabil Bentaleb goal in the Constant Vanden Stock Tottenham ended up sharing the points with the Purple and Whites when Oswal Alvarez scored with 15 minutes remaining. Anderlecht have pulled off impressive results in their previous away ties in the competition; drawing 1-1 in Barcelona and beating Wolfsburg in Germany. Meanwhile Spurs have surprisingly struggled at home; despite winning important travelling fixtures their two previous home ties have ended in a 2-2 draw with Wolfsburg and a poor performance against Barcelona at White Hart Lane which saw them go down 2-0. They will need to improve on their home form for theirs, and Chelsea’s sake.
