Loic Remy - The Premier League’s favourite transfer rumour

France Football

The Marseille striker has now been linked with a move to Sam Allardyce’s West Ham, with almost half the league reportedly chasing the player. Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United, Chelsea and QPR are among teams to be credited with an interest in him of late.

Every now and then, a player truly catches the eye of the English media, who start linking them to every team they can think of. With West Ham now rumoured to be in the chase for Loic Remy, the striker is apparently on the radar of eight sides (at the last count).

West Ham join QPR, Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea, Arsenal, Newcastle, Liverpool and Everton in the hunt for Remy, who has previously said he would not be leaving Marseille in January. The question is, what makes Remy such a coveted player?

For a striker in the French league, his record is relatively unimpressive, with a top return of 18 goals in a season and a career tally of around 1 goal every three matches.

This year, he has started only two games for Marseille, generally being used as off the bench, and has only scored one goal, the consolation in a 4-1 loss to Lyon. Remy is often used a wide striker in a three pronged-attack, but you’d still expect a greater goal-scoring return from him.

Despite this, the 25 year old Remy is still being consistently linked with a £10 million move to England. He is a talented player, and his physical attributes would seem to suit the Premier League.

Remy also still has the potential to become a player who merits the kind of interest reported, and his ability to play across a front three makes him fit nicely with the in vogue formation in the Premier League, but the level of interest apparently shown in him does not correlate either with his form or an outspoken desire from the player to leave France.

Whether any of the reported moves are remotely likely is now impossible to know, but it would be interesting to see Remy in the Premier League, and with Marouane Chamakh the other striker currently being linked to West Ham, the Hammers fans might be the people keenest to see Remy arrive in England.
