2. 1892 The Nutcracker is performed for the first time at St. Petersburg with music by Tchaikovsky and danced by the Russian Imperial Ballet.

3. 1903 - Orville and Wilbur Wright make the first flight in a heavier-than-air plane at Kitty Hawk, N.C

4. 1944 - During World War Two, German tanks, aircraft and paratroops cross the Luxembourg and Belgian borders in massive counter-offensive

5. 1969 - The U.S. Air Force ends its "Project Blue Book" and concluded that there is no evidence of extraterrestrial activity behind UFO sightings

6. 1973 - Paula Radcliffe is born

7. 1982 - The Who play the 'last concert of our farewell tour' at Toronto's Maple Leaf Gardens

8. 1983 - Three police officers and three members of the public are killed and many others injured after a car bomb attack near Harrods

9. 1986 - Mrs Davina Thompson makes medical history when she becomes the first person in the world to be given new heart, lungs and liver, at Papworth Hospital in Cambridge

10. 1987 - The Simpsons featuring Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie debuts on Fox as a half-hour prime time show

11. 2003 - Former school caretaker Ian Huntley is convicted of the murders of 10-year-olds Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman
