News, views and rumours relating to Manchester United in the past 24 hours.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted his team were lucky to avoid 'embarrassment' against Sunderland, despite their 3-1 victory at Old Trafford on Saturday.

"Sunderland could have had two or three towards the end; it could have been embarrassing," he conceded.

Meanwhile United defender Phil Jones told the Manchester Evening News Ferguson had banned his players from watching rivals Manchester City in action on Saturday lunchtime, ahead of their fixture that afternoon.

“We just focus on the game – that’s the gaffer’s rules,” he revealed.

Sunderland boss Martin O’Neill believes United bought the title when they purchased Robin van Persie

After the game, Sunderland boss Martin O’Neill asserted his belief that United bought the title with their signing of Robin van Persie for £30 million from Arsenal in the summer.

“He’s been fantastic and you always felt United would give themselves a big edge by getting Van Persie,” said the Black Cats’ coach who also compared the Dutchman to Barcelona's Lionel Messi.

Van Persie may have the edge on the field for United but there are serious doubt over his singing ability, after he performed ‘Glory Glory Man United’ at the clubs’ Christmas party, held at teammates Rio Ferdinand’s restaurant on Saturday night.

The United stars then headed on to Panacea nightclub where they were reportedly swarmed by scantily clad young ladies who had been tipped off that the footballers had left the restaurant and were headed out for a night on the tiles.

In transfer news, speculation that United will make a move for PSV midfielder Kevin Strootman continues with sources claiming Arsenal are set to enter the race to sign the Dutch youngster.

The Express also claims Ferguson is ‘contemplating’ a move for Sunderland goalkeeper Simon Mignolet,  both of which directly contradict Ferguson’s adamant claims that he will ‘definitely not’ make ANY signings in the January transfer window.
