Five Premier League destinations for Jack Butland - What would be his best move?

Goalkeeping Gloves

Birmingham's talented goalkeeper is an option for Everton, Liverpool, Southampton, West Ham and Aston Villa. Where should he go?

The Birmingham City keeper may be moved on to raise funds considering the current financial situation at St Andrews. While Lee Clark is reluctant to let him go it may be a deal that is taken out of hands. So where could he go?

Jack Butland is England’s most promising young keeper. At just 19-years-old he was Great Britain’s number one at the recent Olympic Games and made his international debut for England against Italy in the summer.

This season he was handed the number one jersey after Ben Foster completed a permanent move to West Bromwich Albion and he has since become a figurehead in Lee Clark’s side. Many teams have reportedly tabled bids for him in the past and seen them rebuffed but there are several factors that may be transpiring against Clark and City as they try their best to hold on to the talented stopper.

Former QPR chairman Gianni Paladini is still in the process of trying to formalise a takeover at St Andrews. Current owner Carson Yeung has had his assets frozen as he faces serious allegations of money laundering. This has seen the clubs finances stagnate and without the necessary takeover funds will need to be generated through other means. Considering that Butland is currently the clubs most valuable asset he is most likely to be let go in January.

While Clark maintains that no deal will be cheap the club will certainly have to consider selling in order to balance the books in the short term; and with Colin Doyle and David Lucas in reserve the loss of Butland would not be overwhelmingly devastating for the Championship side.

So where should Butland go?

Everton

David Moyes is a confirmed admirer of Butland and admits to previously enquiring about his ability. The Scot is believed to be planning ahead as Tim Howard is now 33-years-old he has to have one eye on the future. Everton goalkeeper coach Chris Woods is now on the lookout for younger options to be the future Goodison Park number one and there are not many better than Butland.

While first team football might originally be tough to come by in the long term this could be a solid option. Under the tutelage of Woods and training with an experienced stopper in Howard his game would improve tenfold before becoming Everton’s undisputed number one.

Southampton

If he wanted immediate first team football in the Premier League then here is his best option. With Kelvin Davis out of favour and Artur Boruc making life difficult for himself Nigel Adkins has been forced to show faith in Butland’s Argentine contemporary Paolo Gazzaniga. Despite some positive attributes Butland is by far the better player and Southampton have previously shown an interest in the Bristolian.

While walking into the first team is almost a given Southampton are still very much in a relegation fight and he could be back playing Championship football next season if he made this move.

Liverpool

Another team who have reportedly made contact over the youngster he would certainly fit in with Rodgers philosophy of young talent. Again he may struggle immediately for a first team spot with Pepe Reina the current custodian. However with only Brad Jones and Peter Gulacsi currently in reserve a move to Anfield may again prove beneficial in the long run.

West Ham United

A deal based on logic; The Hammers are currently enjoying the Indian summer of Jussi Jaaskelainen’s career but the Finn is 38 at the end of this season and long term backup has to be considered. While 24-year-old Irishman Stephen Henderson is currently at the club Butland could also be an option.

Aston Villa

This would not make him a very popular man but you can’t be friends with everyone and a young talented British keeper would fit in perfectly to Paul Lambert’s plans at Villa Park. With Shay Given past his best and only Brad Guzan as a challenger Butland would fancy his chances of making the number one jersey his own.
