A round-up of news and views relating to Chelsea over the past 24 hours.
In the wake of Chelsea’s Club World Cup final loss to Corinthians, David Luiz has said that he hopes that his side can win the Premier League this season to make up for not winning the tournament in Japan. Another Brazilian player at the club, Lucas PIazon, criticised his teammates following the 1-0 loss, saying that other than the Brazilian players, Chelsea showed an “unacceptable” lack of desire.
Juan Mata also commented on the loss, praising the opposition keeper Cassio and lamenting that his side couldn’t take their chances. Mata also spoke about Chelsea’s chances for the rest of the season, saying he hopes they can bring home four trophies from their remaining four competitions.
Chelsea may still face further repercussions from the game, with FIFA still considering extending the one match ban given to Gary Cahill following his red card. Cahill was red carded after kicking out at Emerson, and he criticised the Corinthians player after the game for going down too easily.
Cahill will currently only miss Chelsea’s trip to face Leeds in the Capital One Cup on Wednesday. Leeds have already knocked out Everton and Southampton in the competition, and their midfielder Paul Green is gunning for Chelsea’s scalp as well, promising a feisty encounter:
“It’s going to be great to play against a big team like Chelsea. I’ve played Arsenal, Man City and Man United but never Chelsea. It’ll be a tasty game because there’s a bitter rivalry between the sides.”
Leeds’ manager Neil Warnock is always looking forward to the affair, saying that his side have no pressure on them due to Chelsea’s superiority on paper. Leeds are in good form in the Championship, having won four of their last five games.
In transfer news Chelsea are reportedly set to test Everton’s resolve with a £20+ million bid for Marouane Fellaini. The Belgian midfielder is waiting to find out if he will face retrospective action for his violent conduct in Everton’s 1-1 draw at Stoke on Saturday, and there has been speculation that he will have played his last game for Everton if a lengthy ban keeps him out of the team until January.
Chelsea have also been reported as interested in making a move for Bafetimbi Gomis in January. They will face competition from Rafa Benitez’s old club Liverpool, with both Premiership sides rumoured to have sent scouts to watch Gomis play for Lyon on Sunday.
Barcelona might be considering a bid for Chelsea’s talented young keeper Thibaut Courtois. The Belgian is currently undertaking his second season on loan at Atletico Madrid, and was on the receiving end of Lionel Messi and company in Barcelona’s 4-1 win over Atletico at the weekend.
