A round-up of news and views relating to Chelsea over the past 24 hours.
John Terry won’t be risked in tomorrow’s Capital One Cup clash with Leeds at Elland Road, despite returning to training and making the bench for Chelsea’s two World Club Cup games. Rafa Benitez has described Terry’s knee problem as complicated, and that he cannot say how close the defender is to returning to action.
Chelsea will also be without Gary Cahill, Ramires and John Obi Mikel for the match at Elland Road, with the trio all suspended. Daniel Sturridge is still an injury doubt, but could make the squad.
Leeds have a trio of injury worries, with Jamie Ashdown, Jerome Thomas and Lee Peltier all struggling for fitness. Neil Warnock’s side will certainly be without Alan Tate, who is cup tied. An encouraging fact for Chelsea fans to note is that their side have never lost to Leeds in a cup competition; the two sides have met 11 times in the past.
Rafa Benitez has said he will be happy to shake Neil Warnock’s hand before the match, with the Leeds manager also keen to put their past behind them. The two fell out when Benitez fielded a weakened Liverpool team against Fulham, a match they subsequently lost, helping the Cottagers to escape relegation whilst Warnock’s Sheffield United went down.
The enmity between the two managers is shared by the two sides, and Frank Lampard has warned his foreign teammates about the historic rivalry between Leeds and Chelsea. Lampard has also spoken about the need to be ready for a physical battle on Wednesday night, saying Chelsea won’t be able to “tap it around” and expect to get a result.
There has been further speculation about Lampard’s future at Chelsea, with the midfielder likely to leave at some point next as Chelsea won’t offer him a new multi-year contract. Lampard could even leave in January, with LA Galaxy, Monaco and QPR all reported as interested in signing the midfielder.
Chelsea’s tactic sheets for the Club World Cup final against Corinthians have been spread around the internet, after a journalist working for Brazilian website Globoesporte found them in the Blues’ dressing room rubbish.
In transfer news , Chelsea have been linked with two France international strikers today. The Blues will reportedly battle with Newcastle United, Arsenal and QPR for Marseille player Loic Remy, who has been linked with a move to England for some time. Chelsea are also rumoured to be interested in Lyon’s Batefimbi Gomis, who said today he was flattered by the interest from England. Liverpool are set to rival Chelsea for Gomis’ signature.
